About the Mile

City Mile Dash, created by Cancer Council NSW in 2011, is a fun and exciting lunchtime corporate speed race, designed to settle some old rivalries and raise funds for a fantastic cause.

It’s the chance to challenge your workmates and whip the other corporate competitors around a 1 mile (1.6km) course, right in the heart of Sydney at Barangaroo Reserve.

Alarmingly, 1 in 2 Australian men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85. But it doesn’t have to be this way – in fact 30% of cancers are preventable through maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It’s about time we did something about this!

So, are you ready for Sydney’s Fastest Lunch Break? It is an opportunity to ‘dash’ alongside the beautiful Sydney Harbour where you can race your mates and other company teams for corporate bragging rights. We’re challenging all men and women to run, jog, sprint, wobble, or dash to the finish line for just one mile.

Raise the most funds as a team or as an individual and you could win great prizes! It is fast and furious and a great way to spend a Friday afternoon … what could be better? It’s all for a great cause – raising funds to help beat cancer. Join us at Barangaroo Reserve for the Cancer Council NSW City Mile Dash!

When – 1pm on Friday 23rd June

Do you often skip a lunch break? Recent UK research shows prolonged time spent sitting at a computer increases risk of cancer, heart disease and stroke. By not going outdoors during the day you’re also missing out on precious sunlight which in turn affects your body’s production of melatonin, which affects your mood. Did you know that just 30 minutes of exercise each day, even just going for a walk, won’t only make you feel good but it will also reduce your risk of these serious diseases? Do your part – not only to help fight cancer but also for your own health benefits. Get up from behind your device, REGISTER in City Mile Dash then help beat cancer!

About Cancer Council NSW

What do we do? Cancer Council NSW is a community funded; community focused cancer charity that receives no direct government funding. We are the trusted independent voice on all cancers, for all people, guiding communities on what they can do to prevent, treat and manage cancer.

Every year in NSW alone, more than 39,000 new cases of cancer are expected to be diagnosed and the impact on families, carers and communities is significant.

Whilst cancer is one of the leading causes of death among Australians, around one-third of all cancers can be prevented with a healthy lifestyle. Cut your cancer risk by not smoking, reducing alcohol intake, eating healthily and exercising.

Being overweight increases your long-term cancer risk, so watch the waistline. Keep your doctor happy by eating less processed meat.  Limit red meat to 3-4 times a week.

For further information about reducing your cancer risk visit www.cancercouncil.com.au or call 13 11 20 Information and Support (local call cost anywhere in Australia).
